Research Interests

Jakobsen worked for some years for international humanitarian
organizations on gender and violence issues in refugee settings in various
conflict zones in Africa before embarking on her current research project,
which has grown out of her experiences in those settings.

She is looking at the socially shared norms surrounding male-on-female
partner violence and clientilistic leadership styles in two districts in
Tanzania. She is also a standby technical advisor to the UN-IASC on
gender-based violence in emergencies.

Research project:

Distinguishing between the use and abuse of power: Attitudes to
'wife-beating' and 'corruption' in peri-urban Tanzania
