Research Interests

Archaeology, with a research focus on the Iron Age of West Africa,
non-industrial craft production in Mali, and archaeology in East Africa.
Currently working on Pemba Island, Tanzania on 8th-16th-century Swahili
settlements, both stonetown centers and rural villages, comparing elite and
non-elite households, and changes in political economy.
