Recherche	West Africa, including West African Islamic history, and especially Hausa studies, is my speciality. Currently working on a number of projects for publication, in the areas of methodology, interethnic and interreligious relations, Islamization, and others.
Publications	- Spurious Arabic: Hausa and Colonial Nigeria_ (2000: University of Wisconsin (Madison) African Studies Center) - Slave Elites in the Middle East and Africa_ (jointly edited with Toru Miura) (2000: Kegan Paul International) Have published on South African and Sudanese labor history, African culture in the U.S., historical linguistics, African Studies in Japan, and other fields (see my website below for further information).
