Research Interests	Research primarily in Senegal, Mauritania, and Mali, related to the last two centuries, Muslim societies and French colonial rule. Coordinating a project, "The African Digital Library for West African Sources," based at Matrix and African Studies at MSU and financed by the National Science Foundation. It's purpose is to develop resources in sound, image and text for educators, students, researchers and the general public related to West African culture, society and history, and to solve some of the problems associated with digitization in the process.
